Ali Figgat - Head
Gold, Silver Groups
Coach Ali started swimming at the age of nine on the county
recreation summer, but really started to take swimming seriously as
a freshman at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah where she
grew up. She was voted as team captain for her junior and senior
years and led her team to win back-to-back state championships in
2007 and 2008. She helped set the state record in the 200 Medley
Relay swimming the breaststroke leg, and was also honored with the
Eric Hoff Memorial Award. She chose not to swim in college, but
went on to regret her decision. In 2009 she helped start, and
captained, the Master’s Club team at Utah State University.
In 2011, she had the opportunity to compete at the Master’s
National Championships in Mesa, Arizona where she placed top 5 in
all of her events.
Coach Ali has been teaching swim lessons since 2004 and is
familiar with both Red Cross and Swim America teaching programs.
She was the swimming lessons program director at Stang Aquatics
Center from 2011-2012. She officially began her coaching career in
2010 with the Cache Valley Marlins USA swim team and Mountain Crest
High School team both located in Hyrum, Utah. The boys’ team
won back-to-back state championships both years she coached at
Mountain Crest. After graduating from Utah State University in 2012
with a BFA in Graphic Design she moved to Salt Lake City where she
started coaching for Swim Utah USA swim team and East High School
swim team. The East High boys’ team went from ranking
14th at the state championships the previous year, to
placing 4th the year she coached there. She also spent
two summers coaching at the Salt Lake Swimming and Tennis Club in
Salt Lake City where the team went undefeated, winning the
conference championships. Each of these coaching locations has
offered Ali the absolute best quality training; she has been
closely mentored and taught by level 4 ASCA coaches and had the
opportunity to work with many swimmers who have competed at the
Western Zone Championships as well as Junior National
Championships. Coach Ali started coaching for the Fort Hood Area
Dolphins in June 2014 as an assistant coach and was promoted to
head coach in December 2014. She is excited for the opportunity to
grow the program and see improvements in each athlete. Coach Ali
believes that “pretty strokes make you pretty fast” and
places a large emphasis on swimming with correct stroke technique
for maximum efficiency.
Gabriella Cordero - Assistant Coach
Coach Gabi began competitively swimming at age eight. At age 13,
she qualified for the Speedo Junior National Championship in the 50
freestyle and 100 backstroke. Unfortunately, she was unable to
attend the meet and stopped competing at age 14 after undergoing
surgery for a liver transplant. Coach Gabi was able to return to
competition in college; she swam at Division III level for
Montclair State University in 2010 where she competed at the
Metropolitan Championships, placing 1st in the 50 freestyle and 4th
in the 100 backstroke. In 2011 she transferred to Rutgers
University where she placed 1st in the 100 backstroke
and repeated her win in the 50 freestyle, simultaneously setting
the Rutgers University record for the 50 freestyle. During her
junior year of college, she became a mom to her daughter, Liliana,
and in 2014 graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Coach Gabi’s coaching career began while she was in
college. She coached for Cougar Aquatic Club and the Clifton
Seahawks, both located in Northern New Jersey. Many of her swimmers
have competed at the Eastern Zone Championships, the Boys and Girls
Club National Championships, and many other high-level competitive
meets. Coach Gabi says that the best part of coaching is witnessing
how far swimmers come from the start to the end of a season, and
finds it to be so rewarding to see their successes.
